How Do Online Florists Deliver Flowers?

Copyright (c) 2010 Janet Blackwell

You can order flowers online and have them delivered anywhere in the US. All you need is a physical location. You can have flowers delivered next day or same day almost anywhere in the country. Just know what you're getting before you buy.

Many online flower delivery websites contract with local florists to fulfill their orders. Some florists have their own growers and stores. Some online florists tell you up front and others do not. This is something you can ask about. There are advantages to both.

When you place an order online, the website may tell you that your order will be fulfilled by an "affiliated florist." This means that your order will be transmitted electronically to a local florist. They will arrange your flowers and deliver it themselves. Even if you order from a wire service like FTD or Teleflora, the flowers will be delivered by a local florist. If there are any problems with your flower order you know who to go to to have it resolved.

The wire services provide the networks for independent shops and facilitate the transfer of orders nationally and internationally. This helps allow a seamless, speedy method of delivery of fresh flowers around the world.

Be aware that when you order a flower delivery on the Internet, your flower arrangement may not look exactly as you expect. Your flower arrangement may not look like the picture you saw on the web page. The pictures on a web site represents the type of arrangement that will be delivered. This is not an exact image of the exact arrangement. The local florist will try to deliver an arrangement as close to the picture as possible. The more exotic the flowers or precise the picture, the less likely your arrangement will look like it.

A local florist will do their best to match what you ordered. I have worked for one and we always did our best, but sometimes we couldn't do it for the price we got. Or we didn't have the particular flowers in stock. Stick to more common flowers for the best results.

Some online florists have their own distribution centers across the country and they ship all orders directly from these sources. Rather than use a wire service to contract with a local florist, they ship directly from these centers. Just be aware that flowers can be damaged when they are shipped ready to go. They often come in vases and if you've ever delivered flowers like I do, you know how fragile they can be.

The flowers may be shipped in bulk from another country, arranged and then shipped to you. Even if your order is sub-contracted to a local florist, the website you order from will accept your payment. The web site owners pay a fee to the online store who referred them and pay them for your order. Remember that fees may mean that your $50 flower arrangement may be more of a $35 arrangement after they take out the fees they must pay for the order.

Don't be afraid to order online and get local flower delivery. Just know how it works and what to expect.
